Robomediation
Welcome to Robomediation. Robomediation is all about robots in general, and the replacement of human workers by robots in particular.
We’ve seen it coming – starting at the gas pump where the pump takes payment and you pump your own gas, to the grocery store where the self-serve lane takes your money and you pack your own groceries, to the airline ticket counter where you check yourself in and get your boarding pass from a semi-intelligent computer.
In all these instances – machines have taken over a job which was previously done by a human. How about the hundreds of thousands of Roombas and “look alikes” which now clean floors and carpets around the world. That is one heck of a lot less sweeping being done by humans.
What is the logical conclusion of machines getting intelligent and flexible enough to do work traditionally associated with people. Won’t robots take jobs away from people? What about stocking clerks, corporate receptionists, and fast food workers? In all of these areas – robots are already on the drawing boards to displace these workers.
Think about transportation. There is a growing interest in self-flying commercial aircraft, in robotic surgeons, and self-driving cars. The displacement of workers in these instances would be massive.
Think about agriculture. I wouldn’t call tractors robots, but they are pretty good machines and capable of doing much more than a person with a hoe or rake can do… The fraction of the American population who are farmers today is about 2 percent; once it was 90 percent. The number of underground coal miners is down by 90 percent since the end of WWII.
Think about industry. Robots help companies stay competitive by helping produce better quality products at a lower cost. Whether new jobs are created for the displaced factory workers – the jury is still out.
With robot servants becoming more useful to humans – yes – they will take jobs away from people? But, massive unemployment could be a potential economic problem, and we need to prepare for keeping a consumption society when many jobs for the middle class are gone.
I have read most of the writings concerning the above by the author Michael Brain. I especially liked his essay entitled “Manna”. Mr. Brain sees massive unemployment and addresses the issues of keeping the world economy going through consumer spending. It is an inspiring work.
